COVID-19 Update #6
It has now been two and a half months since Coronavirus impacted touch football at BMTA and I want to sincerely thank you all for your patience in these challenging times. We have received numerous messages of support and well wishes for the staff and I am pleased to report that they are all doing well and are looking forward to touch being back as much as everyone else is.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have been afforded more clarity with what a return to touch will look like. The Federal Government released their Roadmap to a COVIDSafe Australia, which was closely followed by Queensland’s own roadmap and then some more specific information on rebooting sport & recreation in our state. You may have also seen information shared by Touch Football Australia regarding the protocols involved in returning to play.
Unfortunately, with a return to play not possible until at least the 10th of July, the board and management at BMTA have made the tough decision to conclude all Season 1 competitions.
While disappointing, the long delay between games and the negative impact continuing the season would have on our traditionally larger Season 2 competitions made the decision clear. While we hope to see everyone back for Season 2, this decision also allows each individual the opportunity to decide what is best for them in assessing a return.
Given the competitions began, there were several costs incurred by BMTA which cannot be recovered including referee fees and staffing costs. Thankfully, our governing bodies, Touch Football Australia & Queensland Touch have waived affiliation fees and covered the insurance costs for the weeks we did play. There are also ongoing facility maintenance costs to ensure that when we return to touch, we have amazing fields to play on and a clubhouse to return to. BMTA will provide partial refunds on team fees, with more information going to our junior clubs, schools and team contacts. BMTA will not provide refunds to individual players so please ensure you speak with your club/team contact.
- Adult social competitions
Teams will be provided the option to either receive a partial refund (paid directly to the Team Contact) on their team fees or push the funds towards entry into our Season 2 competitions. Please talk to your Team Contact and we hope to see you back for Season 2.
- Junior girls’ competitions
Please await advice from your school or junior club regarding their individual processes.
- Junior boys’ competition
The season concluded and Champions were awarded before COVID-19 forced suspension. Congratulations to all competing teams.
We have also partnered with the Australian Sports Foundation to allow you to make a tax-deductible donation to BMTA to help us achieve our goals. We have received Brisbane City Council funding to upgrade our irrigation system, however, with COVID-19 impacting our operations the ability for BMTA to fund our contribution is at risk. If you can donate some of your refund, it would be genuinely appreciated.
As attention shifts towards a restart, I can assure you that BMTA will be doing everything required to ensure a timely return to touch football. At this stage, we are working towards returning in late July with our regular Season 2 competitions. We will need to implement some changes, but the safety of all of you remains our highest priority.
As more information comes to hand, we will be sure to share it with you and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the second half of the year!
Other brief updates:
Under Queensland’s current Level 2 restrictions training is permitted in limited numbers, however contact, including ‘making a touch’, is not permitted. Adherence to these rules is essential to formal sport returning, so please adhere to them. If your team or club wishes to train at BMTA, we are offering a 50% discount on our daytime field hire fees until our competitions return. These sessions must be booked in advance to ensure availability and start at $25/field/hour.
If you have recently visited Whites Hill, you will notice our grounds team have done a fantastic job to ensure you return to play on quality fields and our maintenance shed construction is well underway. Please:
- Stay off all fenced areas and away from construction
- Ensure dogs remain on their leash throughout Whites Hill Reserve and you clean up after them
- Remind others to do the same, you are our best eyes and ears.
Mustangs uniforms were delayed but we are expecting delivery this week. We will contact everyone who purchased uniforms regarding collection processes once we have been able to process them.
Please download the COVIDSafe app and encourage your teammates to do the same. Use of the app helps keep our whole touch community safe.
Stay safe. We are on the way out of this but there is still plenty of work to do.
